BIG GAINS, small start

I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Well Rome wasn’t built in a day” and interpreted as take your time or as an excuse not to keep going. See what you didn’t know, is that’s not how the phrase ends. It goes on to say “But they were laying bricks every hour.”

When you set a big goal, it can be hard to fulfill all at once. But if you break it down into little goals it becomes much easier. Think about it. If I told you to save $5 a day you wouldn’t think its too hard… Change that to save $150 a month and it looks a lot different doesn’t it?

They are the exact same amount of money, it just seems easier when you stretch it out.

The same concept applies with anything. You wouldn’t plan on playing in a video game tournament if you’ve never touched a gaming console… Right? First you have to practice and familiarize yourself with it.

You have to start small!

As children we are taught the alphabet and how to count to 10. You wouldn’t expect a 3 year old to read Marcel Proust’s “A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu” (the longest book)… Even asking them to read “A cat in the hat” would probably be a challenge.

“Stay in Your Lane!”

I can’t believe I quoted Lavar Ball… We can call the man crazy, but he did have a point.

Whether it’s walking to the corner of your street every day, or challenging yourself to run a mile everyday.  Just make sure you are doing something positive that will lead to your Big Gain.

Pretty soon you will feel like that’s a piece of cake. I can save $10 a day or I can run 5 miles! Whatever you started with, just keep improving. DON’T GIVE UP.

If you miss a day, use it as motivation the next day. You may not be able to do double, like save an extra $10 or run 2 miles for the day you missed, but that is ok! As long as you are holding yourself accountable in the long run.

Maybe save $1 extra until you get caught up or jog 5 more minutes after your usual finish.

Go write it down!

Write down your big goal and break it up into 10 little(manageable) steps. Make sure those small steps look easy when you start. Before you know it you’ll be at step 9 without even thinking about it.

What BIG GAINS do you want?

Everything is easier with a partner. If it’s to help break your goal into Smaller parts or if it’s just someone to keep you accountable.
